Logo Stitch Instructions

Here is the technique I use to make the rainbow "logo" stitch.

You will need:

Your "rainbow" colored floss for the Apple IIe pattern

Scissors

White Glue

Masking tape or painter's tape

Wax paper or something that thread and glue won't stick to. (I used a small paper cup here, you could also use a plastic lid from a clean takeout container etc.)

1. Cut a small piece of embroidery floss for each color. Use about 4 inches for each stitch and cut them all the same length. You will need enough to stitch it through and tie a knot in the back. If you are making multiple logo stitches, you can cut them longer to make 2-3 per strip. (for example, you want one for your monitor and one for a duodisk, or you are making kits to take to kfest...)  These can be kind of a pain to make, so I would recommend making enough for more than one at a time. :)

2. Separate 1 strand from each thread. Set the remaining threads aside and keep them separated so they don't get tangled.

3. Tear or cut a strip of tape that is a bit longer than your string. Tape it down onto a piece of scrap paper or wax paper, sticky side up with two or more other pieces of tape.  This time I added one in the middle, because sometimes it doesn't stay down, which can be annoying...

4. Pull your first strand tight and lay it down across the tape. Get it as straight as you can, but it doesn't have to be perfect. Leave a little bit of string on the end on the "sticky side down" part. This will make it easier to pull the thread off of the tape later.

5. Add your second strand. Line them up as close together as you can without overlapping. This is where things can get tricky. Use your fingernail, scissor tips or a cuticle pusher to gently nudge the strands together if needed.

6. Continue doing this with all six strands. Be extra mindful that you get the order of the colors correct. You can pull out a thread and start over, but it's really annoying. Note, if you end up having to do this sometimes the thread will break and you will have to use a new one.

7. Take a dab of white glue and rub it between your thumb and forefinger to spread it out, then spread it over the thread on top of the masking tape. Allow to dry.

8. When the thread is dry, gently pull up the thread. It is glued together at this point but can still come apart.

9. Run a dab of glue between your fingers again and spread it across both sides of the thread and smooth it. You want just enough glue to keep it together. If you have any gaps, you can try to gently smooth and squeeze them back together.

10. Lie the thread on a surface to dry such as waxed paper or a plastic lid from a clean takeout container. Here, I used a small paper cup.

11. After the thread is dry, cut the ends so they are even. If you made a longer piece, cut into 4 inch or so strands so you have one per logo stitch.

12. To stitch the logo stitch, it can be tricky to keep the colors in order. What I do is find a spot on the thread where the colors are in order (sometimes they get a bit twisted.)

Sew one end of the stitch from the front of the canvas, unthread the needle, then re-thread and re-sew the other half of the stitch from the front of the canvas again. Pull the thread back and forth so that you land on a spot on the front where the colors are in order, if needed. Tie a knot in back and cut off the ends. The thread is stiffer from the glue, so I don't bother sewing it the rest of the way through like you would when finishing regular stitches.
